Run a quiz as a test

The same quiz link works for revision and for a test. What changes is a handful of settings: when it opens and closes, how long students have, what counts as a pass, whether everyone gets the same questions, and how many tries they get. All of them are in the share dialog, and none needs a student account.

Before you start

  • A quiz you have reviewed. For a test, read every question and answer before sharing.
  • Open it, choose Share, and expand Link settings.
  1. 1

Choose when it opens and closes

Start accepting responses at lets you share the link in advance: a student who opens it early sees the date and time it opens instead of the questions. Stop accepting responses at closes it on its own, so nobody starts after the lesson.

Both use your own time zone. Clear either one to remove it, or switch Accepting responses off to close the quiz straight away.

  2. 2

    Set the pass mark

Pick 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or 90%, or No pass mark. New quizzes start at 70%. The pass mark decides what students read at the end (“You passed!”, “Nearly there: 5 points away”, “Keep practising”; never “Failed”) and the pass rate on your results page.

With no pass mark, students see their score and a message about it, and the results page leaves the pass rate out.

Changing the pass mark later updates the results page straight away, because it is worked out from the scores.

  3. 3

    Add a time limit

Choose from 5 to 90 minutes. Students are told on the start screen, see a countdown that turns red in the last minute, and the quiz hands itself in at zero with whatever they have answered.

The clock is checked on our side too: answers that arrive more than a minute after the limit are refused. An attempt handed in late, for example after the Wi-Fi dropped, is still marked, and shows a Late label in your results so you can decide what to do.

  4. 4

Give each student a different set of questions

With a longer quiz, Questions per student deals each attempt its own random selection, for example 10 of 30. Neighbours see different questions, and the results page still shows how every question went across the class. Turn on Shuffle question order and Shuffle answer choices as well, and even students who get the same question see it differently.

  5. 5

Limit attempts, ask for names, choose the feedback

For a test, set Attempts per device to 1, make Student names required so every result has a name, and consider Show answers: Never (score only) so the key does not travel to the next class.

Students are told before they start that their teacher can see if they leave the page. Each switch to another tab or app is counted and shows as Left the page 2 times next to their result, and as a column in the Excel and CSV exports.

  6. 6

Read the results and take them away

The results page shows the pass rate against your pass mark, every attempt with its Late and Left-the-page labels, and how each question and topic went. Export Excel gives you one row per attempt with every question marked, the question list, and a Topics sheet once the quiz has topics; Export CSV is still there for older spreadsheets.

A link-based test is not a locked-down exam

The left-the-page count comes from the student's own browser, and it can have innocent reasons: a notification, a calculator app, a dropped connection. Treat it as a reason to ask, never as proof. Attempt limits are per device, so a student with a second device can try again, and nothing stops someone sitting beside them. For high-stakes exams use your school's exam system; this is for class tests and checks.

Common questions

What happens when the time runs out?

The quiz hands itself in with the answers given so far, and the student sees their result. Unanswered questions score zero.

Does the timer pause if a student leaves the page?

No. The time limit runs from when they start, whether the page is open or not, so closing the tab does not buy extra time.

Can I change the pass mark after students have taken the quiz?

Yes. The pass rate on the results page is recalculated from the scores. Students who already finished saw the message for the old pass mark.

Do previews use these settings?

Your own previews skip the opening time, closing time, password and attempt limit, because you are a member of the workspace, and they never count in the results.
