What the Socrative file contains

Choose Download / Export in the quiz editor, then Platforms → Socrative. You get an Excel workbook named after your quiz, ending in _socrative.xlsx, laid out like the template Socrative's Import Quiz screen offers: a note on row 1, the quiz name in B3, the step headings on rows 5 and 6, and one question per row from row 7.

Columns in the Socrative workbook

Question types

  • Multiple choice: Multiple choice, with up to five choices and the correct letter in H.
  • Multiple answer: Multiple choice with each correct letter in its own cell (H, I, J…). Socrative marks it right only when a student picks every correct answer.
  • True / false: Multiple choice with True and False as answers A and B.
  • Short answer, fill in the blank, FAQ: Open-ended. Socrative has no answer key for open-ended questions, so the expected answer is written at the start of the explanation (Answer: …).
  • Matching, ordering: Left out of the file. The export tells you how many questions it skipped.

In Socrative

Import it into Socrative, step by step

The labels are from Socrative's help article on importing a quiz (April 2026). The exported workbook is already in the template's layout, so there is nothing to copy across.

  1. 1

In AI Quiz Maker, open the quiz, choose Download / Export, then Platforms → Socrative, and save the _socrative.xlsx file.

  2. 2

In Socrative, go to Library, tap Add Quiz, then Import Quiz.

  3. 3

    Upload the exported workbook.

  4. 4

If Socrative reports an error, it names the row, so you can fix that row in the workbook and upload it again.

  5. 5

Open the quiz in your Library and check every question and correct answer before you launch it.

Built to Socrative's template

Socrative imports quizzes from one Excel template, and that template is strict about where things go: the quiz name in a box near the top, the step headings a few rows down, the question type from a drop-down with two values, Multiple choice and Open-ended, up to five answer columns, and the correct answers in five separate columns, one letter per cell. The export writes the workbook in exactly that layout, so the file you download is the file you upload.

Files exported before 20 October 2026 used a more compact layout (quiz name on the first row, all correct letters in one column, question types Socrative does not offer) and had to be copied into the template by hand. If you still have one of those, export the quiz again instead.

Multiple answers and explanations

Socrative supports more than one correct answer on a multiple-choice question, and its help article notes that students must select all of the correct answers to get the question right. Multiple-answer questions from AI Quiz Maker therefore carry over with the same marking rule: select every right choice, no partial credit. If you would rather give partial credit, keep those questions in the AI Quiz Maker version of the quiz instead.

Each question's explanation goes in the template's optional Explanation column, so students can still see why an answer is right after they respond. Open-ended questions have no answer key in Socrative, so for short-answer, fill-in-the-blank and FAQ questions the explanation starts with the expected answer.

Limits to plan around

Socrative imports up to 100 questions per template and recommends splitting a longer quiz into two imports and merging them afterwards. The export writes the first 100 questions and tells you how many it left out. The template takes up to five answer choices per question; a question with more keeps every correct choice and loses wrong ones from the end, and the export says how many questions that happened to. Socrative's free accounts can keep up to five quizzes in the quiz list at once, which matters if you plan to import a whole unit.

Socrative's template asks for plain characters. Maths symbols and accented letters are written as they are; if a row fails to import, Socrative names it, and simplifying the symbols in that row is the first thing to try. Socrative's Library also has a Copy-Paste Questions option, which uses AI to turn pasted text into a quiz; if you use it, double-check the answers it designates against your export.

Socrative for the room, a link for homework

Socrative is built for quick checks while the lesson is running, and its reports stay inside Socrative. AI Quiz Maker is useful on either side of that lesson: to generate the questions from your slides, notes or a worksheet, to run a second check on the answer key, and to send the same quiz home as a link that students open without an account. The results page then shows which questions each student missed.

Exporting costs nothing. Every export format, Socrative included, works on the free plan, which includes 20 AI quiz generations in total with up to 15 questions each.

What doesn't carry over

  • Matching and ordering questions are left out (the export says how many).
  • Short-answer, fill-in-the-blank and FAQ questions become open-ended, with the expected answer in the explanation rather than an answer key.
  • Up to five answer choices are written; extra wrong choices are dropped from the end.
  • At most 100 questions go into one file, Socrative's import limit.
  • Your share-link settings (password, closing date, shuffling, student names) stay in AI Quiz Maker, and Socrative's results stay in Socrative.

Yes. Since 20 October 2026 the export writes Socrative's template layout (quiz name in B3, questions from row 7, correct letters one per cell). Files exported before that date used a different layout; export the quiz again. Socrative names the row if anything in an upload is wrong.

Multiple choice, multiple answer and true/false go in as Multiple choice; short answer, fill in the blank and FAQ go in as Open-ended. Matching and ordering questions are left out.

Yes. Each question's explanation is in column M, the template's Explanation (Optional) column. For open-ended questions it starts with the expected answer.

Socrative's help centre says up to 100 questions per template. The export writes the first 100 and tells you how many it left out; split longer quizzes and merge them after importing.
