Respondus 4 export

Export your quiz to Respondus 4

Download a plain-text file, or copy the text, in the numbered, lettered layout Respondus 4 imports. Multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false, short answer, fill in the blank, matching and FAQ questions all follow Respondus's Standard Format, so the file imports as it is.

The file

What the Respondus file contains

Choose Download / Export in the quiz editor, then Respondus, to save a .txt file named after your quiz ending in _respondus.txt. Copy Text (RESPONDUS), further down the same menu, puts the same text on your clipboard so you can paste it into a Word document instead. Each question is numbered, a type line sits above the number when the question is not plain multiple choice, each choice is lettered, correct choices carry an asterisk, and the explanation sits before the choices as Respondus feedback.

Parts of each question in the Respondus file
LineWhat it holds
Type: MA / F / MT / EA type line directly above the question number for multiple-answer (MA), short-answer and fill-in-the-blank (F), matching (MT) and FAQ (E, essay) questions. Multiple choice and true/false need none.
1. Question textThe question's number in the file, a period, a space and the question. Numbers run 1, 2, 3… over the questions that were written.
~ and @ feedbackThe explanation, before the choices: once after ~ (shown for a correct response) and once after @ (shown for an incorrect one). Written for multiple-choice, multiple-answer and true/false questions.
a) b) c) d)Each answer choice on its own line, lettered a), b), c)… in the quiz's order (up to t, Respondus's limit of 20).
*b)An asterisk directly before every correct choice, with no space, as the Standard Format asks.

A three-question example

1. Which planet is closest to the Sun?
~ Mercury orbits at about 58 million km from the Sun.
@ Mercury orbits at about 58 million km from the Sun.
a) Venus
*b) Mercury
c) Earth
d) Mars

Type: MA
2. Which of these are gas giants?
~ Jupiter and Saturn are mostly hydrogen and helium.
@ Jupiter and Saturn are mostly hydrogen and helium.
a) Mars
*b) Jupiter
*c) Saturn
d) Venus

3. The Moon produces its own light.
~ It reflects light from the Sun.
@ It reflects light from the Sun.
a) True
*b) False

Type: F
4. What is the largest planet?
a) Jupiter
b) Planet Jupiter

Type: MT
5. Match each planet to its moon.
a) Earth = The Moon
b) Mars = Phobos

Question types

  • Multiple choice: Number, lettered choices, asterisk on the correct one, explanation as ~ and @ feedback.
  • Multiple answer: Type: MA above the number, with an asterisk on every correct choice.
  • True / false: a) True and b) False, True first, which is the order Respondus needs to recognise a true/false question.
  • Short answer and fill in the blank (one blank): Type: F, Respondus's fill-in-the-blank, with the main answer and each accepted alternative on its own lettered line. The blank shows as _____.
  • Matching: Type: MT, one lettered line per pair written as left = right. A question whose pairs contain = is left out, because Respondus uses = to split each pair.
  • FAQ: Type: E (essay), with the model answer after a) so Respondus stores it as the answer.
  • Ordering, fill in the blank with several blanks: Left out of the file. The export tells you how many questions it skipped.

In Respondus 4

Import it into Respondus 4, step by step

Respondus 4 is a Windows program your institution licenses (or a single-user licence from Respondus). The labels below are from the Respondus 4.0 user guide.

  1. 1

In AI Quiz Maker, open the quiz, choose Download / Export, then Respondus. Save the .txt file (or use Copy Text (RESPONDUS) and paste into a Word document).

  2. 2

Open Respondus 4 with the personality for your learning system (Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Moodle…). From the Start menu, select Import Questions.

  3. 3

Step 1: select Plain Text as the file type (or MS Word if you pasted into Word) and use Browse to pick the file.

  4. 4

Step 2: choose to append the questions to the open file or create a new Exam file and name it. Optionally enter a title stem so questions are titled Chapter1-001, Chapter1-002 and so on.

  5. 5

Step 3: click Preview and read any warnings at the bottom of the window. Fix the text file if a question was misread, then click Finish.

  6. 6

Check the exam on the Preview & Publish tab, then publish it to your course.

Optional

Two optional lines

The file imports as it is. Two things the Standard Format allows that the export leaves to you, because only you know what your exam needs:

Point values

There is no Points line, so every question gets Respondus's default value. Add one above a question; it applies to that question and every question after it until the next Points line.

Exported
Type: F
4. What is the largest planet?
a) Jupiter
With your edit
Points: 2
Type: F
4. What is the largest planet?
a) Jupiter

Question titles

Without a title Respondus uses the first 20 characters of the question. Add a Title line at the start of a question if you want your own; the guide's examples put the Type line first, then the Title.

Exported
Type: MA
2. Which of these are gas giants?
With your edit

Title: Gas giants

Why Respondus is still worth a file

Many colleges build exams in Respondus 4 rather than straight in the learning management system. It is a Windows authoring tool that keeps a question file on your computer and publishes it to Canvas, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Moodle and other systems. Its import reads plain text, rich text and Word files in one layout, which Respondus calls the Standard Format: a question number followed by a period or parenthesis, then lettered answer choices, with an asterisk directly in front of each correct choice.

The Respondus export writes exactly that layout, including the Type lines Respondus uses for multiple-answer, fill-in-the-blank, matching and essay questions, so a quiz generated from your lecture notes, a PDF chapter or a topic can go into Respondus without retyping. Because the Standard Format is plain text, you can also open the file and edit it before importing, for example to add point values or titles.

Explanations and feedback

Respondus can import feedback. In its Standard Format, a line starting with ~ before the choices is feedback for a correct response, a line starting with @ before the choices is feedback for an incorrect response, and an @ line directly after a particular choice is feedback for that choice alone. The export writes each explanation twice before the choices, once after ~ and once after @, so students see it whether they got the question right or wrong. If explanations do not matter for this exam, delete those lines.

The user guide gives those feedback rules for multiple-choice, multiple-answer and true/false questions only, so the export writes feedback for those three types and none for fill-in-the-blank, matching and essay questions. Files exported before 20 October 2026 put the type line under the question, used a Type: SA tag Respondus does not know and attached the explanation to the last choice; export those quizzes again.

Use Preview, every time

Respondus's import has a Preview button for exactly this kind of file. It shows how each question will be read and lists warnings at the bottom, for example a question with no answer selected (Respondus then picks a as the answer) or duplicate titles. Questions are titled with their first 20 characters unless you set a stem. A minute in Preview catches the cases above before the exam reaches students.

Read the answer key at the same time. AI Quiz Maker runs a second, separate model over generated questions and flags the ones where it reached a different answer. Resolve those flags in the editor before you export, so the file Respondus imports is already checked.

Where the questions came from

The questions can come from anything AI Quiz Maker reads: a topic, pasted notes, a PDF, a photo of a page, a web link, or an existing worksheet turned into a quiz without rewriting. You can set difficulty and question types before generating and edit everything afterwards; the export uses whatever is in the editor at that moment.

Exports are not a paid feature. The Respondus export, and every other format, works on the free plan, which includes 20 AI quiz generations in total with up to 15 questions each.

What doesn't carry over

  • Ordering questions and fill-in-the-blank questions with several blanks are left out; the export says how many.
  • Explanations are written as feedback for multiple-choice, multiple-answer and true/false questions only.
  • Fill in the blank takes one answer per question in Respondus, with the alternatives as accepted forms of it.
  • No point values or question titles are written; Respondus uses its defaults.
  • Respondus 4 runs on Windows only.
  • Results from the published exam stay in your learning system, not in AI Quiz Maker.

Respondus export questions

May mga tanong? Mayroon kaming mga sagot.

Export the quiz with Download / Export → Respondus to get a .txt file. In Respondus 4, choose Import Questions on the Start menu, select Plain Text, browse to the file, choose to append or create a new Exam file, click Preview to check for warnings, then Finish.

Multiple choice, multiple answer (Type: MA), true/false, short answer and one-blank fill in the blank (Type: F), matching (Type: MT) and FAQ items as essays (Type: E). Ordering questions and fill-in-the-blank questions with several blanks are left out, and the export tells you how many.

Yes, for multiple-choice, multiple-answer and true/false questions. Each explanation goes before the choices as ~ feedback (correct response) and @ feedback (incorrect response), so students see it either way.

Yes. Copy Text (RESPONDUS) in the export menu copies the same text. Paste it into a Word document or a text file and import that.

No, export the quiz again. Earlier files put the Type line after the question, used a Type: SA tag Respondus does not recognise and attached the explanation to the last choice. The current file follows the Standard Format and imports as it is.

The export does, but Respondus 4 itself is a Windows program, so the import step needs Windows.

Yes. Every export format, including Respondus, works on the free plan.
