What each export contains

All three are in the quiz editor under Download / Export. File names start with your quiz's title.

Moodle XML

Menu: Download / Export → Moodle · File: <quiz name>_moodle.xml

Moodle's own question format and the one to choose for Moodle. Each question gets the name Question 1, Question 2…, a default mark of 1, and its explanation as Moodle's general feedback. Multiple-choice answers are set to shuffle and are numbered a, b, c. Every grade in the file is one of the values on Moodle's grade list, so the import runs with Moodle's default Match grades setting.

  • Multiple choice: Multiple choice (one answer). The right choice is worth 100%, the others 0%.
  • Multiple answer: Multiple choice with several answers allowed. The right choices share 100% and the wrong choices share −100% (for example 50% and −50% with two of each), so a student who ticks every box scores 0. A question with more than ten right answers is left out, because Moodle's grade list has no equal share below 10%.
  • True / false: True/False, with the explanation as general feedback.
  • Short answer: Short answer, not case-sensitive. The main answer and every alternative answer are each worth 100%.
  • Fill in the blank, matching, ordering, FAQ: Left out of the file. The export tells you how many questions it skipped.

GIFT

Menu: Download / Export → GIFT · File: <quiz name>_gift.txt

Moodle's plain-text format, handy when you want to read or tweak the questions in a text editor before importing. Special characters (~ = # { } :) are escaped so they import as text, each explanation becomes general feedback after ####, and each question is titled Q1, Q2…. The file opens with comment lines giving the quiz name, difficulty, date and question count, then one $CATEGORY line named after the quiz, so all its questions land together in one category.

// GIFT Format Export

// Question 1: Multiple Choice (Single Answer)
::Q1:: Which planet is closest to the Sun? {
    ~Venus

    ~Earth
    ~Mars
    #### Mercury orbits at about 58 million km.
}

// Question 2: True/False
::Q2:: The Moon produces its own light. {FALSE #### It reflects light from the Sun.}
  • Multiple choice: = marks the right choice, ~ the others.
  • Multiple answer: The right choices share 100% using values from Moodle's grade list (~%50% for two, ~%33.33333% for three) and each wrong choice gets ~%-100%, so guessing everything scores nothing.
  • True / false: {TRUE} or {FALSE}, with the explanation as general feedback.
  • Short answer: The main answer and every alternative, each with =.
  • Fill in the blank, matching, ordering, FAQ: Left out of the file. The export tells you how many questions it skipped.

QTI

Menu: Download / Export → QTI 1.2 (Canvas .zip) · File: <quiz name>_qti.zip

A zipped IMS QTI 1.2 package, the “QTI .zip file” Canvas asks for. Inside are imsmanifest.xml (the list of what the package holds), the questions in one questestinterop XML file, and a small assessment_meta.xml with the quiz title. Each question names its Canvas question type, carries its scoring rules, and has its explanation as general feedback. Upload the .zip as it is; there is nothing to unzip or rezip.

  • Short answer and fill in the blank (one blank): short_answer_question, Canvas's fill-in-the-blank type, with the main answer and every alternative accepted. Fill-in-the-blank questions with several blanks are left out.
  • FAQ: essay_question, marked by hand in Canvas, with the model answer as feedback.
  • Matching, ordering: Left out of the file. The export tells you how many questions it skipped.

In your LMS

Import it, step by step

Moodle: import Moodle XML or GIFT

Moodle reads both files through the question bank's Import page. The field names below are Moodle's own; where the question bank lives depends on your Moodle version.

  1. 1

Export the quiz as Moodle (Moodle XML) or GIFT.

  2. 2

Open the course's question bank: in Moodle 4 it is under More → Question bank; from Moodle 5.0 question banks are listed under More → Question banks, where you open the bank you want.

  3. 3

Choose Import from the drop-down at the top of the question bank page.

  4. 4

Under File format, pick Moodle XML format or Gift format to match the file.

  5. 5

Under General, pick the Import category. For a GIFT file, leave Get category from file ticked to put the questions in a new category named after the quiz, or untick it to put them in the category you picked. For Moodle XML it makes no difference.

  6. 6

Leave Match grades on Error if grade not listed and Stop on error on Yes, choose or drag the file, and click Import. Moodle lists every question it read; click Continue.

  7. 7

Add the questions to a quiz from the quiz's Questions page with Add → from question bank.

Canvas: import the QTI .zip

Canvas imports QTI packages through Import Course Content, and the QTI download is already the .zip it asks for.

  1. 1

Export the quiz with Download / Export → QTI 1.2 (Canvas .zip) and keep the _qti.zip file as it is.

  2. 2

In the Canvas course, open Settings in Course Navigation and click Import Course Content.

  3. 3

In Select Content Type, choose QTI .zip file, then Choose File and pick the .zip.

  4. 4

If your course offers it, decide whether to tick Convert content to New Quizzes, then click Import.

  5. 5

Wait for the import to show as completed, then open Quizzes (or Assignments, for New Quizzes). The quiz arrives unpublished under your quiz's title; check every question before publishing.

Note: QTI files exported before 20 October 2026 were a single .xml file without a manifest, which Canvas may refuse. Export the quiz again to get the .zip package.

Brightspace (D2L): import the CSV

Brightspace's Question Library reads a row-based CSV: each question starts with a NewQuestion row, followed by rows for the question text, points and every answer. The BrightSpace export writes exactly that layout.

  1. 1

Export the quiz with Download / Export → CSV → BrightSpace and keep the _brightspace.csv file (it is saved as UTF-8, so accents and maths symbols survive).

  2. 2

In Brightspace, open Quizzes and click Question Library in the tool navigation.

  3. 3

Click Import, then Upload a File, and choose or drag the CSV.

  4. 4

Check the list of questions Brightspace read, then click Import All (or select the ones you want and click Import).

  5. 5

Add the questions to a quiz from the Question Library, and check the point values and the multi-select scoring before students take it.

Note: BrightSpace CSV files exported before 20 October 2026 used a flat table that Brightspace does not read. Export the quiz again.

What goes into the Brightspace file

Every question gets a NewQuestion row with Brightspace's type code, a QuestionText row, a Points row (1 unless the question has its own value) and its explanation as a Feedback row. Multiple choice is MC; multiple answer is MS with Scoring set to RightMinusWrong, so wrong ticks cancel right ones; true/false is TF; short answer and fill-in-the-blank questions with one blank are SA with every accepted answer; matching is M; ordering is O with the items in the right order; and FAQ items become written-response (WR) questions with the model answer as the answer key. Brightspace cannot import its own fill-in-the-blank type from a CSV, so questions with several blanks are left out, and the export tells you how many.

Schoology, and anything else

There is no Schoology-specific export. For Schoology, Blackboard, Teams or any learning platform, the simplest route is to post the quiz link from AI Quiz Maker's Share window like any other web link. Students answer without an account, every question type is marked automatically, and you see the results in AI Quiz Maker rather than in the platform's gradebook. The Aiken and Respondus exports each have their own guide.

Which format should I pick?

For Moodle, choose Moodle XML. It keeps the explanation as feedback, gives multiple-answer questions a penalty for wrong ticks, and Moodle reads it without any settings to change. Choose GIFT if you like to see and edit questions as plain text first. For Canvas, the QTI .zip is the file to use; it also carries fill-in-the-blank questions with one blank and FAQ items, which the Moodle files leave out. For Brightspace, use CSV → BrightSpace. Aiken, which has its own guide, is a further plain-text option for Moodle and other systems that read it.

Whichever you choose, the export is a snapshot. It uses whatever is in the quiz editor at that moment, including your edits and question order, and later changes in AI Quiz Maker do not reach the copy in your course. Finish editing and resolve any answer-check flags before you export.

Why generate the questions outside the LMS

Writing a question bank is the slow part of building an online course. AI Quiz Maker generates questions from a topic, pasted notes, a PDF chapter, a photo of a page or a web link, and can turn an existing worksheet into a quiz without rewriting its questions. You choose difficulty and question types, edit anything, and get an explanation for every answer. After generation a second, separate AI model solves the questions again without seeing the answer key and flags any it disagrees with, so a slip in the key is caught before it reaches a gradebook.

The import formats above are standard, so the same quiz can go to Moodle this term and Canvas next term. If your department shares questions, Moodle XML is also the easiest file to hand to a colleague who runs a different Moodle site.

Before you import a whole unit

Import one short quiz first. Every learning platform has settings and plugins of its own, and five minutes with a three-question test file shows you how the questions look to students, how they are marked, and where they landed in your question bank. Then import the rest.

Exports are free. Moodle XML, GIFT, QTI and every other format work on the free plan, which includes 20 AI quiz generations in total with up to 15 questions each; Pro raises the questions per quiz to 50 for longer question banks.

What doesn't carry over

  • Matching and ordering questions are not written to Moodle XML, GIFT or QTI (the Brightspace CSV includes them).
  • Fill-in-the-blank questions go into QTI and the Brightspace CSV only when they have one blank; FAQ items go into QTI and Brightspace as hand-marked questions.
  • Questions are named Question 1, 2… (Moodle XML, QTI) or Q1, Q2… (GIFT). Moodle XML and GIFT give every question a mark of 1; QTI and the Brightspace CSV use the question's own point value, or 1. Adjust marks in your LMS if you need to.
  • Files exported before 20 October 2026 (QTI as a single .xml, GIFT with one category per question, the old BrightSpace table) should be exported again.
  • Results from your LMS stay in your LMS; share the AI Quiz Maker link instead if you want its per-question results page.

Moodle and Canvas export questions

May mga tanong? Mayroon kaming mga sagot.

Export it as Moodle XML (Download / Export → Moodle). In Moodle open the question bank, choose Import, pick Moodle XML format, choose the file and click Import, then add the questions to a quiz from the question bank.

Moodle XML for most teachers: it imports with no settings to change. Use GIFT if you want to edit the questions as text first. Both give wrong ticks on multiple-answer questions a penalty, and a GIFT file puts all its questions in one category named after the quiz.

Yes. Export it with Download / Export → QTI 1.2 (Canvas .zip), then in Canvas go to Settings → Import Course Content, choose QTI .zip file and upload the .zip as it is. Check the questions before publishing the quiz.

Moodle XML and GIFT carry multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false and short answer. The Canvas QTI package carries those plus fill-in-the-blank questions with one blank and FAQ items (as essay questions). Matching and ordering are left out of all three, and the export tells you how many questions it skipped.

Brightspace, yes: CSV → BrightSpace writes Brightspace's own row-based question template, which you upload in Question Library → Import → Upload a File. There is no Schoology export; post the quiz link there instead.

Earlier versions of these exports wrote QTI as a single XML file without the manifest Canvas expects, put every GIFT question in its own category, and wrote a Brightspace CSV that was not in Brightspace's template. Export the quiz again: the current files fix all three.

No. Moodle XML, GIFT, QTI and every other export format work on the free plan.
