What Is a Fill-in-the-Blanks Generator?
A fill-in-the-blanks generator, also called a cloze test maker, automatically identifies key terms in your content and creates sentences with strategic blanks.
The AI analyzes your source text to determine which words and phrases are most important for comprehension. It then removes those key terms and generates fill-in-the-blank questions that test whether students can recall the correct terminology in context. This type of assessment is particularly effective for reinforcing subject-specific vocabulary, testing factual knowledge, and building reading fluency across all grade levels and subjects.
Where to put the blank
A fill-in-the-blank sentence tests one thing, and which thing depends entirely on which word you remove. Remove a content word — the process, the structure, the term — and you are testing whether the student knows the material. Remove a function word, or a word the rest of the sentence makes grammatically inevitable, and you are testing whether they can read. Both produce a sentence with a gap in it; only one produces evidence. The blank is the question, and everything around it is context.
The failure to watch for is a sentence that answers itself. 'The process by which plants make food from sunlight is called _____' has a single possible filling for anyone who has met the word once, which is fine for a starter and useless for an assessment. The stronger version removes a word the student must have understood something to supply, and leaves enough context that a student who did understand can supply it. Read each sentence twice — once with the answer in place and once without — and change any where the grammar, the article or the sentence's own definition hands it over.
Everything here runs without an account, three a day, and nothing is saved to our servers. For a version where students choose rather than recall, the MCQ generator writes multiple choice from the same material, with a printable answer key.
